Kikuyu is among the most widely used lawn grasses in South Africa. Known for its resilience, drought tolerance, and low maintenance needs, it withstands foot traffic effectively. This makes it a favored option for lawns and sports fields in frost-free regions.

Buffalo grass, though slightly coarser than Kikuyu, is another highly popular lawn grass in South Africa. It is often chosen for coastal lawns due to its excellent salt tolerance and ability to thrive in sandy soil with high calcium content.

Berea grass lacks frost and drought tolerance and doesn't cope well with heavy foot traffic. However, it offers an attractive lawn when properly maintained and watered. It's best suited for tropical or subtropical coastal regions, as well as warmer inland areas with high humidity and sandy soils.
